Support Andrus

Home Visiting Program

ANDRUS provides an array of programs and services to families directly within their own homes and neighborhood organizations through Healthy Families New York and the Therapeutic Parent Aide Services programs.  Our objectives are to help families promote their children’s healthy development, school readiness, and literacy skills at critical junctures in their lives.  Our home visiting services promote the inner strength of families by building their capacities to handle stress, negotiate service systems, and provide nurturing for their children.  We honor the central role of parents and effectiveness of peer- and community-based support.  In addition to in-home visits, we partner with public schools, child care programs, supportive housing projects, hospitals, clinics and other community based organizations.

Healthy Families New York (HFNY)

Healthy Families New York (HFNY) is a comprehensive prevention program that promotes safety for young children by supporting their families.  HFNY offers in-home support services to expectant mothers and new parents beginning prenatally or shortly after birth of the child until the child enters Head Start or Kindergarten.

HFNY builds on the strengths of the family to ensure that healthy relationships develop between parent and child.  We promote the use of positive parenting strategies that encourage healthy development and improved school readiness skills.  We assist each family with prenatal health education, scheduling of well-baby visits, follow-up of immunizations, lead assessments and screenings, nutrition guidance and developmental screenings.  Parents enhance their self-sufficiency by pursuing educational, vocational and/or professional pursuits.  We link parents to community resources to address concrete needs related to food, clothing and housing as well as to resources such as counseling and support groups.  We strive to prevent child abuse and neglect by teaching families effective ways to manage stress, establish expectations and set limits, and manage emotions for healthy parent-child interactions.

Therapeutic Parent Aide Services (TAPAS)

The Therapeutic and Parent Aide Service (TAPAS) is a three-month home visiting program designed to strengthen parents’ abilities to care for themselves and their children, to restore or stabilize family functioning, and to avert the need for foster care placement. TAPAS serves families with children from birth to 18 years of age who reside in Southern Westchester.

Therapeutic Parent Aides work with families to improve parenting skills, including parent education on effective discipline techniques and communication styles, child development, and age-appropriate expectations for children.  We train families on how to navigate the school system and advocate for their children, and how to identify issues which can impact school attendance. Families improve overall household functioning by learning budgeting and financial management skills, and participating in safety checks to ensure that the home is accident-proof and suitable for children.  Families are connected to medical providers for preventive care and health concerns. The Therapeutic Parent Aides help families identify any need for additional services such as mental health, early intervention, or special education.

TAPAS utilizes the Nurturing Parenting curriculum and Sanctuary Model while working with children and families who have experienced trauma or chronic stress.
