Support Andrus

Social Work Internship

First & Second Year Social Work students working toward their MSW have the opportunity to participate in a nine-month (two semesters – September through May) internship through ANDRUS that meets all client contact, administrative, and supervisory requirements.

The Internship is offered through two separate tracks: the Mental Health Division clinic-based track (traditional CMH services for children, adults, and families) and the Campus Division residential- and school-based track (provision of therapeutic services to children and families).

The Mental Health Division of ANDRUS
The Mental Health Division of ANDRUS is an outpatient, community-based mental health setting with its primary goal being early identification of and intervention with children and their families at risk for mental illness or under intense situational stress. Mental Health Division resources are focused on the treatment of children, adolescents, and adults who have significant emotional, developmental and/or family problems. Although it is among the largest facilities in the nation specializing in outpatient treatment of children under the age of 13, opportunities to treat adolescents and adults are also available.

Placements are in one of the area clinics, located in White Plains, Yonkers and Peekskill.

All MHD interns participate in regularly scheduled didactic seminars and are expected to take on an active role in all training activities. Internship seminars are supplemented by scheduled staff agency-sponsored trainings as well as monthly attendance opportunities at local Grand Rounds through New York Presbyterian Hospital in White Plains.  Interns are encouraged to participate in this additional professional development experience if their academic schedule allows.

Second Year Students with interest in applying for placement in the ANDRUS Mental Health Division Internship Program can submit their resume directly to Dr. Ruth Nirenberg, Director of Clinical Training & Supervision, at rnirenberg@jdam.org.

Applications will be reviewed and interviews will be offered starting in March, annually.

The Campus Division of ANDRUS
The Campus Division of ANDRUS is located on a 110-acre campus in Yonkers, New York. Campus programs serve more than 175 seriously emotionally disturbed children, grades 1-9, in two distinct treatment programs: residential and day treatment. Children from both the residential and day programs attend the Orchard School, located on the ANDRUS campus.

All Campus interns work as part of a collaborative team along-side psychiatrists, program managers, clinical social workers, school personnel, and residential staff.  Interns have opportunities to provide adjunct therapeutic services as well as lead/co-led groups both in the school and cottage setting.   SW Interns are included in Treatment Planning Conferences, Family Meetings, Family Events, Behavior Planning, and CSE Meetings.

First Year Students with interest in applying for placement in the ANDRUS Campus Division Internship Program can submit their resume directly to Sandra Vilar-Ferreira at svilar@jdam.org.

Applications will be reviewed and interviews will be offered starting in March, annually.
