We provide care through a multi-disciplinary Treatment Team comprised of Milieu Therapists, a Recreational Therapist, a Clinical Social Worker, a Lifeskills coordinator, a Program Manager, and a Psychiatrist. These team members collaborate to assess the needs of each child, devise a treatment approach that is tailored to that child, and plan for and work towards eventual discharge back to family and community.
Among the cutting edge treatments we provide are sensory, vestibular and body-integration interventions that are now recognized as crucial in helping children on the autism spectrum and children who have lived through multiple losses and/or unsafe situations. The care we provide is informed by the literature on trauma-informed care and restraint reduction and the Sanctuary Model.
The Sanctuary Model is a premier evidence-informed model of trauma-sensitive careand the foundation of the care we provide through the Residential Treatment Program. Through Sanctuary, we are able to foster resiliency, recovery and healing in the children we serve through a democratic approach in which children and families participate in their care and in the structure of the program itself. We implement Sanctuary based on the latest innovations in the field and all of our staff are trained in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI), a highly-regarded model of crisis avoidance and de-escalation developed by Cornell University. We also employ a variety of other therapeutic services and keep current on the emerging neuro-biological understanding of trauma’s effects on the brain in order to learn techniques which support optimal brain development.
Life in the cottages provides a stable structure that is firm but not rigid. We help children through predictable therapeutic activities and the routines that are common to any home setting, such as personal hygiene, cleaning bedrooms, studying, and having meals together. Every effort is made to have children collaborate in the creation of their cottage community to instill a sense of responsibility and community ownership. We provide academic instruction on-campus at the Orchard School, a specialized school that has won the National School of Excellence three times. In addition, the ANDRUS campus also features a variety of therapeutic amenities which add richness to the everyday lives of the children in our care, including a Ropes Challenge Course, a therapeutic motorbike program, an indoor pool, an on-site movie theater, hiking trails, and exercise rooms.
While the best evidence-based practices inform and permeate our setting, it is the love and caring of all the staff for the children and families we serve that sets the ANDRUS Residential Treatment Program apart. Our focus on providing innovative care at the highest standards of excellence enables us to provide an unparalleled quality of service to nurture families and help restore the community. Nearly 90% of our graduates fulfill the dream of rejoining a family. Generations of alumni have gone on to lives of greater independence and stability.
